If, like me, your version of enjoying the countryside includes a nice cosy B&B – preferably with a roaring log fire, a full English and perhaps a light potter around the gift shops and cafes of the nearest village then the thought of fell running would fill you with horror. The idea of actually volunteering to do a sport which is so gruelling is beyond me, but for a growing number of athletes it is the only way for them to enjoy the outdoors and achieve a hard earned endorphin high.
Fell runners are an interesting breed. Quite often they have evolved from gym bunny to urban jogger and beyond, but there are a few rural types who quite simply grew up loping across the moors. Come rain or shine you will see a few hardy souls on many a popular hilltop, and they take it very seriously this lot – all the gear, and no hiding from a fitness level that would do the British forces proud. And it’s not just the boys out there reaching for the summits either, the ladies are holding their own, and doing us girls proud.
